One of my first and favourtie memories were watching Disney films and I still love Disney films to this day. I remember being scared of "The Black Cauldron", and refusing to eat apples after watching "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", hoping to become a mermaid when I saw "The Little Mermaid" and being scared to fall asleep after watching "Sleeping Beauty". This love for Disney has not left and I started to research into the story and inspiration behind these classic films as I wanted to know as much as possible. What I came to realise is that nearly all of the films were originally folklore told by traveler's and then turned into stories. I wanted to read the original stories and I was taken back into how "un-innocent " the originals were. They were filled with violence, sex and alcohol. One of my favourite story was "Snow White", written by the Brothers Grimm along with many other famous stories and now films. I love the darkness and the different types of elements within "Snow White" because there is nothing else like this story and if you wanted to create an artistic piece inspired from "Snow White", there are numerous of different ways you can go with it.
The painting that I did (shown above) was a mix of both the Brothers Grimm "Snow White" and Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". I wanted to keep the image of Snow White that Disney did so it is recognisable but I mixed it with the darkness that the Brothers Grimm did. I decided to do the whole picture in different media's but all in Black and White, apart from the apple and ribbon which I did red. The contrast between the Black and White is something that I like and it makes the whole image seem rather dark. However the apple I wanted to do Red as that the iconic symbol in Snow White in any version you read.
